Don't Feed the Buffalo & Lessons Learned While Locked Out in My PJ's
Friday Feb 25th Big B & MB set their alarms for 4:30 a.m. They got up & ate approx 2lbs bacon, cereal, PBJ's, poptarts, & pretty much anything else that was readily edible in our kitchen. Then from 5 A.M. Friday til 11:00 A.M. Saturday they participated in a 30 hour fast with their FPC youth group.
This is something they have been planning & really pumped up about. Obviously, we've never suffered from hunger & starvation like children in 3rd world countries. However, as a nurse I know all too well the side effects of short term hunger & have witnessed how differently people react. I have gone many 12 hour shifts without eating & with little to drink & a majority of the time my patients are not allowed anything to eat or drink & are limited to a few ice chips. I preach to the choir every time I'm @ work for my pregnant patients to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily to prevent dehydration. The majority of pregnant patient's that come in with false labor or complaints of pain could have saved themselves a visit if they would just have just drank plenty of water. I have seen the pain & discomfort caused by just by MILD dehydration. Hopefully, none of us will ever truly experience the pain, hunger, or suffering caused by not having food & water. I have seen the sweetest coworkers & patients snap after a few hours with nothing to eat. Trust me, It's not pretty. We are so fortunate that we only have to endure a growling tummy from time to time. The boys handled it well. They even went to school, sat & drank water during lunch while all their friends ate. That evening they went to church with rest of the FPC youth & played games, watched movies, bible study, & endured the rest of the 16 hours with only juice & water. Then unlike, the unfortunate starving children they raised money for, they celebrated their 30 fast with bacon, sausage, eggs, & pancakes. Thanks to some sweet ladies @ church, who spent their Sat morning cooking up a storm. I wish no one had to suffer from hunger. I realize a 30 hour fast will never compare to the true pain & suffering caused by true hunger & starvation. But, I think they all walked away with a better understanding of how good they have it. It's always difficult & intersting trying to get the "real" & full story from boys. But, from what I gather, everyone did great & nobody freaked out. Of course in true buffalo fashion, my boys spent the rest of the weekend binge eating & making up for their 30 hours without.
While my two oldest were going 30 hours without food, I was going without sleep. Like an idiot, I stayed up most of the day Friday after working all night. Knowing I would later regret this, I tried to warn the Big Buffalo. However, @ the time it was more important to have me help get them packed & get groceries for a weekend @ the lake. The Big Buffalo has been waiting for a nice weather permitting weekend to go & check on things & get it ready for spring. In years past he could go do this anytime. But, with his new job he now has to wait for a weekend, holiday, or break. So, he & LB left after school on Friday. For the first time in weeks I'm actually off Sat & Sun. So, the big brothers & I planned on joining them Saturday after their fasting. I worked Friday night while Big B & MB spent the night @ church. When the big brothers got home from church Saturday morning I was close to the point where I get disoriented & delusional from lack of sleep. In addition to being able to always recognize this, Big B also always steps in & takes care of things & me if his daddy isn't around. Bless his heart, not only does put me to bed or insist I go nap, he will keep MB & his camera away. MB sees my sleep deprived, delusional state of mind as an opportunity to take pictures & make videos of me looking crazy & talking nonsense & he takes full advantage of it whenever possible. He then later uses the pictures & videos to humiliate or black mail me with. If you ever need any dirt on me, MB is definitely the go to guy for the goods. Anyway, since we knew I had to work the night before, we had already designated Big B as the driver. Looking forward to my nap, I showered & put on clean PJ's for our road trip. With MB riding shotgun, Big B drove us to the lake, & I napped in the backseat. It was the most pleasant ride to the Lake that I've had, that I can remember. While in route, the Big Buffalo called & said he needed us to pick up a couple of things @ Lowe's in Paris. I'm not one of those shopper's that wears my PJ's in to the store. But, I couldn't take the chance & let the big bros go by themselves with the Big Buffalo's list. So, I went into Lowe's with my PJ's on. We then stopped @ a convenience store/gas station on our way out of Paris, on our way to our place. At this point, I can't even remember why we stopped. I think I was thirsty. But anyway, long story short....
Keys got locked in Big B's truck & we spent the rest of our Friday night trying to unlock it. The locksmith who finally arrived was unsuccessful as well. But, he was able to fish the keys out with some of his handy tools. We learned some valuable lessons that night about roadside assistance, locksmiths, ALWAYS travel with a fully charged phone & don't rely on a car charger, & dressing appropriately when traveling. Maybe it's best to NOT travel in your PJ's unless you are 100% certain you won't have to get out of the vehicle, go in public, or spend 3 hours @ a gas station trying to unlock your vehicle. Although I regretted wearing my PJ's in Lowes's & spending a few hours @ a gas station in them, I was glad I was wearing them when we finally got to our place. Because, I went straight to bed & slept til Sunday afternoon. Just in time to get up, clean, pack it up & hit the road again. |

My Pinterest Page, If I had Time To Have One
Pinterest is the the latest addictive online website. I have been avoiding it like the plague. Because, I know I would spend a great deal of time wasting my time on there. But, here are some things I would definitely Pin if I had a Pinterest page.

~Today's favorite child...Teenagers say the funniest things, & Pics~
Uh yeah, that's what he had said & my response .........Yeah, I got nothing to say back to that. I'm just laughing to myself & smiling inside. Cause, I always dreaded them outgrowing the cute baby, toddler, & preschool phases, when they are so sweet, innocent & say the cutest things. I truly thought I would never enjoy having teenage sons, with all of their violent video games, camo, & guns. But, they are still so sweet, most of the time, & they still say pretty cute things. But, what I enjoy the most right now is laughing with them. Because, they are so funny. My childishness & lack of maturity puts us all about on the same level. So, except for the rare occasions that I may be attempting to be a good momma, set a good example, teach or discipline them, we all get along pretty great.
So, what did the Pretty One put on to come back to the dinner table to eat & humor this old momma with some casual candid pics: a t-shirt of course.

~No show, VDay, & the Break-up ~
Very disappointed the forecasted snow was basically a no show except for some flurries that turned into sleet & rain. We haven't had any of the white stuff this year. I am one of these deranged moms that LOVES the snow, snow days, & being snowed in. People always complain about having to get out & drive in it. I'm lucky I guess, my hubby usually gets me where I need to be. I prefer to be snowed in @ home with my boys. But, I have had to spend some days & nights @ the hospital & we always make the best of it there & make snow cream, snow angels, have a friendly snowball fight, & see who can make the most creative snowman. Anyway, hopefully we will get some before the winter is over.
So today is VDay. My hubby came through this year with no prompting or reminding. This is the first in years. I'm sure it has to do with the job. He just got me the usual flowers, candy, card, & he added some starbucks coffee he knows I Love & would never buy for myself & he picked out an adorable pink vase. Pink is my favorite. Very thoughtful & it's the thought that counts. This was a big impovement, considering his failures from years past. Which, I will never understand. He was the most romantic, spontaneous, & thoughtful gift giver when we dated. I've come to the conclusion that boys & men do well in this area during the dating & courting phase because 1. they are so desperate to score. &/or 2. their momma is doing the shopping or giving them the ideas. I am guilty of #2. I'm a girl & pretty certain I know what girls like & I don't want my boys spending too much money or paying too much for a cheesy gift for their girlfriend. I want to teach them how to be thoughtful. I also don't want their future girlfriends/wives to be disappointed with socks for valentines day. I try to guide them in the right direction by giving ideas, advice, & such. Like when the girlfriend says she doesn't want anything for her birthday, what she means is you better not show up empty handed. Speaking of girlfriends, Big B initiated the big break-up yesterday. I had a feeling that's where things were headed. Unfortunately, she didn't. Didn't help things that he waited til the day before Vday & dropped her like a bomb in the school parking lot. At least the young Buffalo waited til after school to crush the little butterfly. He's not talking about it. But, from what I gather my young buffalo tried to be a gentleman & break it to her gently & he asked if they could remain friends. But, in true Buffalo fashion, he crushed her spirit with one step, walked away unharmed & unaware of her wounds, went to the locker room to lift weights with the football team like nothing ever happened & never looked back. Oh, that little butterfly will heal. Unfortunately for her, this will not be the last time she will be crushed by a buffalo. Hopefully, she will learn that these big, insensitive, & dangerous creatures don't mean to hurt us & also, that she will need some big steel iron wings if she plans to play with the buffalo. As for me & my young buffalo, i'm gonna have to try & teach him to be more sensitive & gentle with the the fragile butterfly & pray he's not tempted by a bad or fast one. I know someday a pretty butterfly will catch his eye & he will leave here & go make a little herd of his own. But, for now I'm happy to be the #1 butterfly in his life again. Here are some pics of Big B & his sweet little ex. She's a really special & sweet girl. She will always be dear to my heart because she didn't break his. I hope when she recovers from the break-up, they will be able to remain friends & look back fondly on some great times they had together their Sophomore year.
